MARY POPPINS RETURNS MOVIE REVIEW
Mary Poppins Returns is directed by Rob Marshall and stars Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Dick Van Dyke, Angela Lansbury, Colin Firth, and Meryl Streep. The plot of the movie is decades after her original visit, the magical nanny returns to help the Banks siblings and Michael's children through a difficult time in their lives. Rob Marshall tries his best to recapture the magic of the original film and there are moments when he comes close, but overall I was very disappointed with this film. Emily Blunt was a fantastic choice to take over the role of Mary Poppins I do think that she is missing a softness that Julie Andrews had, but she has some wonderful moments. All three of the child actors who play the Banks children are wonderful and thankfully not annoying. Ben Whishaw is also very good. His song where he sings to his dead wife is really emotional and one of the only songs I liked in the movie because I could understand the lyrics and believe me that is a rarity in this film. Dick van Dyke has very little screen time but in his few minutes he proves that he is a better singer and dancer than anyone in this movie. I also loved the callbacks to the original throughout the film. As for what I did not like about this movie the animated sequence it goes on for way too long and it didn't look that good. Lin-Manuel Miranda tried his best, but I just saw him playing himself. Meryl Streep's character in the movie I found to be extremely annoying and her song even more so. I didn't care much for the songs and I can't even tell you what the songs are about. What bothered me the most about the movie is how stupid it is. Michael is careless with an important document that has gone missing and it didn't help that I spotted this document immediately as soon as it showed up on screen, but it takes the entire movie for them to find it. 2 out of 5 stars for Mary Poppins Returns. I hope you enjoyed my review.
