MAZE RUNNER: THE DEATH CURE MOVIE REVIEW

Maze Runner: The Death Cure is directed by Wes Ball and stars Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Giancarlo Esposito, Aidan Gillen, Walton Goggins, Ki Hong Lee, Barry Pepper, Will Poulter, and Patricia Clarkson. The plot of the movie is young hero Thomas embarks on a mission to find a cure for a deadly disease known as the "Flare".    With Death Cure, Dylan O'Brien continues to impress me. I would love to see him in an amazing movie, unfortunately, this series has just been fine and with this concluding chapter, it continues to be just fine. It is a well-directed film with some great action. My problem is that it takes a long time to tell what I feel is a very simple story. The movie is not actually about the cure that's certainly impotent to the story. This cooperation is trying to find a cure for a virus that turns people into zombies.  It comes off as more of a subplot with the main storyline being Thomas and his friends looking for their friend who has been imprisoned.    Thankfully there are a lot of well-directed action scenes along the way and some good performances to make me feel somewhat interested.  For the final film in the series, it didn't feel as climactic as I would have liked it too. You can tell that there was a lot of effort put into not just this film, but the whole trilogy, but it's unfortunate that none of the movies are that memorable.  2 out of 5 stars for Maze Runner: The Death Cure. I hope you enjoyed my review.

MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS MOVIE REVIEW

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is directed by Wes Ball and stars Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Giancarlo Esposito, Aidan Gillen, Ki Hong Lee, Barry Pepper, Lili Taylor, and Patricia Clarkson. The plot of the movie is after having escaped the Maze, the Gladers now face a new set of challenges on the open roads of a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles.    I did not like the first Maze Runner so I was not looking forward to watching this one, however for about the first half of this movie I had a great time. Dylan O'Brien was great once again. He is good in the action scenes and he's good in the smaller more subtle stuff. Also, there is a lot of intense running as you would expect with a movie called Maze Runner. There's a stunt really early on in this movie that I thought was very well done where a character slides under a door that is closing at just the right second. Throughout the first hour, I was constantly surprised by how much I was enjoying it.      Then the movie introduces us to a new faction of people that we are supposed to care about and maybe they were more fleshed out in the book, but in the film, I didn't give a shit. There is a strange party scene where everyone is getting drunk and having visions. Also for the first half of the film, the monsters were practical, but once it got to the second half they were CGI. The film is 2 hours and 10 minutes and this second half really slows things down. The movie also doesn't feel that original.  3 out of 5 stars for Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. I hope you enjoyed my review.

THE MAZE RUNNER MOVIE REVIEW

The Maze Runner is directed by Wes Ball and stars Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Will Poulter and Patricia Clarkson. The plot of the movie is Thomas is deposited in a community of boys after his memory is erased, soon learning they're all trapped in a maze that will require him to join forces with fellow "runners' for a shot at escape.  This is a pretty well-directed movie with a great lead performance by Dylan O'Brien.   The movie opens very intensely he's on this elevator leading up to this place and all of a sudden all these young kids are looking at him. He has no idea where he is and he has to learn all the rules.  The maze sequences are very impressive and a little suspenseful. All the stuff with the griever creatures I liked a lot, even though the CGI was a little obvious.  The adversary relationship between Dylan O'Brien and Will Poulter's characters add a lot to this movie.    I do have some big problems with the movie first is the characters besides Dylan O'Brien's character Thomas and Will Poulter's character Gally everyone else was bland and forgettable. I also hated the way this movie ended. This ending may have worked in the book, but it's the filmmaker's job to make it work for the big screen and I felt that certain things did not work at all.  My biggest problem was when you finally find out what is happening why everyone can't remember things and what they are doing there it was very predictable.  The movie does look beautiful, some of the action scenes are well filmed and some of the acting isn't bad. Other than that I was very disappointed by this movie.  2 out of 5 stars for The Maze Runner. I hope you enjoyed my review.

12 STRONG MOVIE REVIEW

12 Strong is directed by Nicolai Fuglsig and stars Chris Hemsworth, Michael Shannon, Michael Pena, Navid Negahban, Trevante Rhodes and Geoff Stults. 12 Strong tells the story of the first Special Forces team deployed to Afghanistan after 9/11; under the leadership of a new captain, the team must work with an Afghan warlord to take down the Taliban.    I went into this movie not knowing what to expect I didn't see any trailers for it. I did end up really enjoying this movie. This movie has a fantastic cast and they give this movie there all.  I love the rapport between the soldiers and you completely buy them as this tight-knit unit. There is not a weak link in this cast. Chris Hemsworth is especially great in this movie he carries a lot of this movie. As for the movie itself the thing that impressed me the most is how beautiful this film looks. The cinematography is gorgeous. The action scenes are extremely well done there is not a lot of shaky cam, there are some beautiful wide shots, the editing is terrific and the sound design is amazing. Every time there was a battle sequence in this movie I was completely immersed in what was happening.    The relationship between Chris Hemsworth's Captain and the warlord that he is teaming up with was enjoyable to watch. They form a great friendship and inspire one another to be better. This is an incredible true story and I am glad that it was told.   My only flaw with the movie is it does drag in the middle for about 10 minutes, but then it picks right back up and I was sucked right back into the story.  4 out of 5 stars for 12 Strong. I hope you enjoyed my review.

THE COMMUTER MOVIE REVIEW

The Commuter is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and stars Liam Neeson, Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Jonathan Banks, Elizabeth McGovern, and Sam Neil. The plot of the movie is a businessman is caught up in a criminal conspiracy during his daily commute home.  Even though this was coming out in January which is where Hollywood dumps all its crap I was looking forward to it because I am a big fan of Liam Neeson. This is a very fun well-made crime drama.  All of the main actors are solid and some of the supporting characters are good even though the acting from the unknowns isn't that great.    What really does work her is the collaboration between the director and Liam Neeson. These two know what kind of movie they are making. They have worked together a few times now and yes each of those films is similar, but they have defiantly perfected this formula.  This director knows how to make some good looking films and this is no exception. There are some pretty shitty special effects towards the end, but aside from that, it looks like there was a lot of effort put into this movie which I was happy to see in a January movie.    This movie does actually has a sense of humor about itself whether its Liam Neeson in the middle of trying to find this person seeing a sign on a building saying "Don't you wish you were home right now" or him walking by a sign that says "See something say something" when he can't because he is being forced not to.  The thrills don't disappoint this is a mystery that is fun. Trying to figure out who this mystery passenger is was a lot of fun.  The big twist of the movie even though I saw it coming it was handled well.  Liam Neeson is awesome as usual and I like that they didn't make his character an action badass. He's an ex-cop who commutes to the city. He's not very well skilled when he gets into some hand-to-hand combat he gets his ass kicked for the most part. I thought it was realistic. The action is very well filmed there is none of that awful shaky cam that so many action directors fell the need to use. The movie has a brisk pace it's not longer than it needs to be and I was entertained throughout.    The only flaws are some of the supporting characters the acting isn't that great, the twist is predictable and some of the effects towards the end are not the best. This was a pleasant surprise especially for a January movie and a great way for me to start off 2018.  4 out of 5 stars for The Commuter. I hope you enjoyed my review.
