RED SPARROW MOVIE REVIEW

Red Sparrow is directed by Francis Lawrence and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlotte Rampling, Mary-Louise Parker and Jeremy Irons.  The plot of the movie is ballerina Dominika Egorova is recruited to Sparrow School a Russian Intelligence service where she is forced to use her body as a weapon. Her first mission, targeting a C.I.A. agent that threatens to unravel the security of both nations.    The main character is someone that you never understand fully. Her decisions are very unclear and that is done purposefully. Jennifer Lawrence continues to prove that she is a fearless actress. There is very little she will not do on screen. This film has a lot of awkward moments and very uncomfortable moments. Our current political climate is going to find it difficult to watch some of these scenes. This lifestyle is not glorified it is definitely shown to be a horrible life.    As a story it has interest and I was compelled at times. On the other hand, it's so long and the main character so confusing it makes it a difficult viewing. Since we don't know what the main character is thinking it makes it hard to relate to her. You do fell for her because she is put in these horrible situations. It's also never really made clear why she went from being a ballerina to being a Sparrow. It is also hard to understand why anyone would say yes to this.    Joel Edgerton is one of my favorite actors and he is great in this. Mary-Louise Parker has a scene that was somehow even more awkward than some of the sexual scenes even though that scene is not sexual. This film takes scenes that are really not that important and makes them go on longer than they should.    There are some positive elements the performances as I mentioned are fantastic. James Newton Howard has composed one of his best scores in a long time the music is beautiful. I do think that most of the action scenes are extremely entertaining.  I admire the fact that Hollywood has made a film like this. It will likely offend a lot of people.   2 out of 5 stars for Red Sparrow. I hope you enjoyed my review and I hope it helped you decide whether to see the movie or not.
